Big Toe Injury
The basal joint of the big toe, known as metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint plays a vital role in the flexion (bending) of the toe. The ends of the joint bones are covered with a smooth articular cartilage. Any injury or wear-and-tear of the articular cartilage results in rubbing of the bones or bone projections to develop on the top of the bone. This bony overgrowth prevents bending of the toe, making walking difficult and painful.
